FLORIDA: Some people tend to overeat particularly in the evenings. But what makes them overeat, they do not know. Regarding this, a latest research has revealed that Homo sapiens hunger hormones are accountable to make them over eat.
In the evening, humans experience fluctuation in the levels of hormones that results into craving for food, and hence they end up eating excessively. As a matter of fact, stress also augments the levels of hunger.
Keeping this in the wits, savants were set out to know how the time influences appetite and whether there is any association between stress and overeating.
The study comprised on 32 grown-ups in between the ages of 18 to 50 years. All of the respondents were obese. Savants conducted two experiments.
In the first one, the participants were asked to keep fast for eight hours before having liquid meal at 9 a.m. For the second experiment, they again let their tummies empty for eight hours and then they ate the liquid meal around 4 p.m.
Also, the academics assessed the stress levels of the respondents while collecting their blood sampless so as to monitor the levels of the stress hormone called cortisol and hunger hormones namely ghrelin and peptide YY (PYY).
Their up shots revealed that those, who ate in the evening, have been reported consuming excessively. It has further been learnt that stress plays a significant role in making individuals to eat in a large quantity in one long stretch.
When individuals take their meals in the afternoon or evening, their stress hormones are more likely to fluctuate, which, in return, triggers binge eating, episodes of wild eating.
While supporting the findings, the study senior investigator from Johns Hopkins, Susan Carnell maintained that the good news is that we can control over our hunger hormones by taking our meals early in the morning. As far as stress is concerned, it can be tackled by doing light to moderate exercise.
The International Journal of Obesity has run their findings.
