Mustachioed Icon of French Cinema Jean Rochefort est mort at 87

M. M. ALAM

PARIS: Jean Rochefort, veteran French actor who starred in more than 100 films, died here today. He was 87.

Rochefort, who was born to rich parents in the western city of Nantes, lamented that he was bored as a child. It was listening to music that he got interested in performing arts.

Shunning studies and getting rid of his deadly dull childhood Rochefort fled to Paris to study drama at the famed Centre d’ Art Dramatique de la rue Blanche.

His movie breakthrough came at the age of 30. In 1972 Rochefort got his first big role in Cannes Palme d’Or nominee Hearth Fires.

Five years later he not only earned global recognition as a comedian following release of An Elephant Can be Extremely Deceptive but also was awarded a Golden Globe nomination.

For 50 years he appeared in art, comedies and popular films.

He won three Césars (or French ‘Oscars‘): In 1975 for Bertrand Tavernier’s costume drama Let Joy Reign Supreme; In  1978 for the naval drama Le Crabe-Tambour (Drummer-Crab); In 1999 he was awarded a lifetime achievement César.

In 2015 Rochefort formally retired after playing a former industrialist who apparently suffered from Alzheimer’s disease in Floride (Florida).
