South African captain faces ball tampering charges in Hobart Test

DUBAI: International Cricket Council (ICC) has announced that it would review footage of the second Test match between South Africa and Australia, after South African captain Faf du Plessis was accused of ball tampering.

The Test match was played in Hobart, capital and most populous city of the Australian island state of Tasmania.

“The charge relates to changing the condition of the ball in breach of Law 42.3 and has been laid by the ICC Chief Executive David Richardson who has exercised his right to do so,” the ICC said in a statement.

“Du Plessis has pleaded not guilty to the charge … Details of the hearing will be announced in due course,” the governing body added.

Du Plessis had previously been in hot water for ball tampering in 2013 while fielding on during the third day of the 2nd Test against Pakistan, in Dubai. He was captured scuffing the ball against the zip on his trousers. The on-field umpires Ian Gould and Rod Tucker penalised South Africa by adding 5 runs to Pakistan’s total, and changing the ball.

The match referee imposed a 50% match fee fine on du Plessis after the fielder pleaded guilty.

South Africa sealed the three-match test series with an 80-run win over Australia in Hobart on Thursday.
