Ukrainian Elina Svitolina is the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Champ!

WANIA ATHER

DUBAI:  Number 7 seed Ukrainian Elina Svitolina won the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championship defeating the former champion Caroline Wozniacki here on Saturday (February 25).

Svitolina dominated Wozniacki 6-4, 6-2 in the final. It was her second title victory this season (2017).

Svitolina has won both the times she confronted Caroline Wozniacki. Earlier it was at Miami Open last year.

The Dubai tournament title is the most prestigious of the six that Svitolina has won. The previous five were lower-level WTA (World Tennis Association) events.

After this title-chase the Ukrainian  is all set to make her debut in the top 10,  jumping from her previous 13th spot: “It’s a big relief, because I knew that if I won this match I would be in top 10. There was an extra pressure. I have dreamed for all my life to be in top 10, now I am feeling amazing and doing it by winning the tournament is more exciting!”

This was Wozniacki’s second consecutive final in a short span of time. Last week it was Doha final! But she has left both without the winner’s trophy.

“I felt that I ran out of steam a little bit and she (Svitolina) took advantage of that. I can take a lot of positivity with me from this week, I am hoping for a good season ahead.” Wozniacki said.

The Dubai tournament title is the most prestigious of the six that Svitolina has won.
