LHC bars interior ministry from chairing NADRA meetings

Published

LAHORE: Interior Ministry Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan was on Tuesday barred by the Lahore High Court (LHC) from chairing meetings of National Database and Registration Authority (NADRA) until further notice.

According to a senior official of the interior ministry, the court also restrained deputy chairman of the authority from working.

“The orders came as Chief Justice of Lahore’s top court Syed Mansoor Ali Shah heard a petition filed by Awais-ur-Rehman Advocate regarding the deputation of eight members at NADRA authority board,” the official said adding, “Justice Shah remarked that the court would not let [anyone] undermine the independence of institutions.”

The petitioner upheld that NADRA Ordinance does not allow the interior minister to chair meetings of the board.

“Despite this, meetings of the board are held with Nisar in the chair,” Rehman stated in the petition.

The petitioner also maintained that Chaudhry Nisar was using NADRA for his “political purposes and influencing the authority by chairing its meetings.”
