A boundary doesn’t make you an enemy, says Karan Johar on making films with Pakistani artists

DAVOS: Bollywood filmmaker Karan Johar has said that he would love to work on projects that show collaboration.

“I would love to work on projects that show collaboration. A boundary doesn’t make you an enemy. Our children live in more peaceful times,” Karan said, in a fiery one-on-one session with two-time Academy Award-winner Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum (WEF) at Davos, Switzerland.

When his co-host, Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy asked about casting Pakistani artistes in his films, the 48-year-old said, “You know what I went through and it was a tough time for me. I have a great regard for talent, but I will never take risk again.”

Karan Johar also advised Pakistani heartthrob Fawad Khan to approach international platforms to highlight his talent saying, “Fawad Khan should find new platforms to showcase his talent. I really hope that one day I can go on the big screen and watch Fawad Khan.

A member of the audience asked Sharmeen and Karan if they would ever consider making a film on whether Partition was a mistake.

On this, the Indian film-maker said he would never make a film on India-Pakistan in his ‘sane’ mind. “I think telling stories about today would make more sense than revisiting what has happened,” he said.

When Karan asked Sharmeen about how she felt about people saying she paints her country in a negative light, the Pakistani filmmaker said she was either loved or hated by people back home, adding that she preferred that to indifference.
